When I started to listen it last night, I got tears in my eyes.. I felt such a tenderness in her album.. the songs are bright ant beautiful, her voice.. and you know that magic moment when you listen to the songs very first time!!! Ah... it's absolutely beutiful!! And song My! My! Time flies! is so nice, it's something new, and dedicated to one irish guitarist, and sounds wonderful, it makes me smile!!
I absolutely like the introduction to the album, the first instrumental song 'And winter came' like a gate to the winter wonderland.. winter Enyaland.. so beautiful! It's so hard to keep my heart not jumping, but I can't help, it jumps and sings..

I love this album! Absolutely love!! wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

Thank you LandL thumbsup2.gif
I will post my review of the album song by song tomorrow, I alreday did it yesterday in the Italian board. Hope to find energy and time to do the same here, in English...or something similar rolleyes.gif

Anyway, for the first time I found the CD in a big store in Rome 5 days before the official release date ohmy.gif They got 96 copies of it that means they already sold 4 CDs on the same day before I bought mine ohmy.gif WOW! Enya I think you are going to crash the charts once again wink.gif

I too listened to the album in my bed but I didn't fall asleep. When at the end I turned off my i-pod (I imported the CD in i-tunes and then on the i-pod without listening the album, what a torture!) I couldn't sleep...but I was dreaming, just the same.

Thank you Eithne for music and dreams. wub.gif Once again sorcerer.gif
LandL
I will post my review song by song later as well.. need to find words, it's not easy to express the feelings rolleyes.gif

Omg, I can't believe Violet, that in Rome they had CD's 5 days before official release lol !!!!

I was listening yesterday again, and at night I dreamt Enya, was a very short dream, but was wonderful!!! Thanks again Eithne!!!!!!!!!!! wub.gif wub.gif hug.gif

And winter came... is an amazing album! it's very magical. I've listened to it every night for the whole week and will continue to listen to it every day throughout the christmas break! It's different listening to the album as it is summer/spring here ( in Aus) at the moment but the songs that mention christmas make me appreciate the summer here and the excitement surrounding summer (even if there's no snow! smile.gif ) smile.gif and christmas!!

Congradulations Eithne! Thankyou sooooo much for the inspirational and beautiful album!

That phrase was already on ADWR album smile.gif

I've listened to the album a few times now. While much of it is very beautiful, I truly miss the spark of originality and Gaelic melodies which marked Enya's earliest albums, Trains and Winter Rains especially is simply Orinoco Flow set to a slower beat. A few of the tracks are practically indistinguishable from each other. Personally I think the 4 Christmas tracks added to Amarantine had more festive spark than this entire album. sad.gif

And Winter Came
Midnight Blue has always been one of my favourite songs and this version with multivocals make it somptuos. Once again, while listening to this song I can smell the wet sand, I feel on my skin the fresh wind coming from the sea and since it’s night I see the blue starry sky above me. I don’t know why there’s something “mediterraneus” in this version though…the wind coming from the sea is less fresh. Maybe…

Journey Of The Angels
When Enya sings of angels you believe her. That music coming from heaven is real, you can feel like you are flying yourself surrounded by angels. Enya does what she likes with her voice and with musical notes she can use both to describe anything. This is a great artist and a great musician.
Lyrics for this song are banal.

White Is In The Winter Nights
Happy Christmas everybody! *jumping around with joy* Splendid, perfect, genius! This song could be the soundtrack of a Walt Disney movie (that means is simply perfect for a Christmas song). Oh what a great musician you are Enya! People can you see the genius of this woman? “Enya make a Christmas song” and this is the result. A jewel. It’s Christmas time, what else could be?
*clapping hands to Roma as well* Lyrics for this song are perfect.

O come, o come Emmanuel
To be honest I never liked this song (sorry) so I would prefer not to comment it, but since Enya is singing I will. Splendid voice, orchestration of choirs and interpretation. A moment of great art.

Trains And Winters Rains
Enya’s pop soul is coming out by album by album. Take it or leave it. I take it.
Much energy in this song, Enya lives in this world and she sings it. This songs sounds a bit like some early 80’s 007’s movie. It’s old fashion pop, very good one though, dark and beautiful. Multivocals and Agnus Dei here and there on the background remind us it’s always Enya, after all.
Lyrics…two things….everything is ok until the train travels “across the plains”. Roma could you please find a different rhyme? “Trains and winter rains” has a meaning, it fits with the music and the rest of the song, “trains across the plains” means nothing, it sounds banal. Then here we find a word we’ll find in other three songs in this album.. “Underneath stormy skyes” so we have “Underneath” number 1. And we’ll find more…

Dreams Are More Precious
I like this song just because it tells of dreams and Enya’s voice and music are so beautiful. It’s a perfect lullaby for me. And yeas, I agree, dreams are more precious than glod. But Roma, please, you can do better than this with lyrics, you have done so much better in the past. Do you realize that starting from this song on your lyrics are full of “ringing bells”, all over the album?

Last Time By Moonlight
For some reason melody in this song sounds half Irish and half Japanese to me…and for some reason I feel like it has the Brennan logo on it, family roots are in the air. Anyway, beautiful song, lovely melody and good lyrics as well. Unfortunately the word “underneath” appears once again, “underneath the heavens”. “Underneath” number 2.

One Toy Soldier
Pure Enya. Perfect Enya, once again. Perfect voice, interpretation, melody, arrangement and all.
Appropriate lyrics, a bit sad but sad is also a toy soldier on his own.
A jewel, the second in this album.

Stars And Midnight Blue
Moving. An Irish ballad, I feel the Brennan logo again, the blue of that Donegal stormy sky and Eithne’s voice so similar now and then to Maire’s one. No offence please, they are sisters after all and melody of this song reminds me so much of Eithne’s home.
What about Roma lyrics? Beautiful, romantic, the story of an old fashion love. Too easy. Everything is beautiful with that voice and that music.
“You have lost yourself in dreaming, I have lost myself in you” *nods*
The Spirit Of Christmas Past
It’s boring to comment Enya’s work, she’s always perfect, music voice and so on. She’s able to create an atmosphere whatever she sings and this time it wasn’t easy since lyrics are silly and tired.
Roma when you are not inspired you should not wite. Respect Eithne, her talent, her music her genius are worthy of the best of you.

My! My! Times flies!
*smiles* See, the so called Queen of New Age (I know you don’t like it Eithne) has finally thrown the mask. Ladies and gentlemen the Queen of Pop is here! Bye bye Beatles, Abba and Beach Boys, Enya is making her music and singing that tomorrow is already here.
Lyrics are appropriate, nothing more nothing less. But we find here Underneath Number 3…”a man underneath a tree”. Roma, “underneath” is a beautiful word but a writer worthy of this name should try to find a different word to express a concept. At least in the same opera, an album in this case. I suggest you to think less at Loxian.

Oiche Chiuin (multivocal)
Tank you Enya and Happy Christmas to you too. sorcerer.gif

Hey, during school yesterday, one of the seniors had to ask some questions for his math project. He asked for my age, what grade i am in, and for my favorite music. I asked him: "What kind of music does enya sing? its new age, or celtic?" And he said it is but it can also be seen as pop.
my first reaction was like: NO!

but then i started thinking abouti t

I just listned to "And Winter Came" every single song in the last hour. And i wonder: Has enya become just another one of those nameless pop stars that will be forgotten?

When i look at the older songs, Orinoco Flow, Caribbean Blue, Anywhere is, Only time, Wild Child, they send a chill down ones spine and they seem unique and every album from A day without rain, to shepards moon has been in my eyes great! But the newest one just doenst feel like it. When i listen to Trains and winter rains, i find it a good song, BUT IT ISNT REALLY THAT SPECIAL! And i was suprised that enya would bring out a song like this, since this is in my eyes 100% pop. I like the song and i am listening to it right now, but i think no song on the album except Dreams are more precious, o come, o come, emmanuel and Stars and Midnight blue is really that great. to base an album on winter and christmas is very special, but i must say i was a little disappointed by the album. Like every album i dont expect to like EVERYSINGLE song, but i would have wished a little more enya in it.

Is it just me or do you think so too?

(please dont say i am crazy or anything just cause you like enya, look at it from a neutral point of view and then speek your mind. I hate it, when you talk about something (sports, politics) it is very hard to talk to someone who can hold a neutral view because they get their own beliefs and views mixed in it up)
Boreas
Palandiell, for the last time, ENYA WILL NOT BECOME ANOTHER WASHED UP HAS-BEEN, ENYA IS SPECIAL, AND ALWAYS WILL BE.
Like it or not, she is in a "pop" category. If you like celtic music, perhaps you should listen to Loreena McKinnet. rolleyes.gif

Palandiell, I couldn't agree with you more..
As stated from my other post in another thread:
I will give you my honest opinion and this is by far my most disliked album from Enya. Maybe it's because I'm already sick of Christmas songs. And for me, she doesn't produce any good and warm melodies/tunes..

/rant
haha well that's just me
Knoxy143
To be honest, I think Enya should have stuck to more traditional Christmas carols, at least 50/50 traditional carols/new material. I personally would have loved to hear an Enya rendition of "Hark the Herald" or "Good King Wenceslas", to release a Christmas/winter album with only two traditional carols feels a bit like being short-changed. "Stars and Midnight Blue" and a few other numbers are simply weak and uninspired filler, the lyrics are almost embarrassing on "Stars".

All in all, it feels like a missed opportunity to me.

As she said, she played her favourite christmas charols, so she can pick anything she wants... I'm happy there weren't too much traditional christmas charols, but more her own created music smile.gif

And people if you are sick of christmas songs and everything about christmas it doesn't mean, that Enya christmas album is weak or worse, just because it is about christmas!
eridanus
Why we can’t comment Enya ?
Certainly, I like her and still like her as all of you.
But for “And Winter Came…” , I think her music is different and far away from previous albums.
Listen to “The Celts” , “ Shephard Moons”, “ The Memory of Trees”, I feel every songs are sweet-sounding. Each song gives me various feelings , some is sad, yearning, dreamy, ethereal , joy, strong, calm. Gaelic lyrics and instrumental songs are very beautiful. It is fascinating and all make Enya different and outstanding beyond other female singers.

When I listen to her new album, I ask myself “ Is it Enya, really?”
For me, now, no any song is impressive at first or second listening.
Many songs are ordinary. Or, because I’m not a Christian, so, I may not understand Christian’s feelings in Christmas Season.

I think her music has changed gradually, some styles has disappeared.
I miss her old style music that always lead me to fantastic world.
Such as “the memory of trees”(which is the Best for me) , Afer Ventus, Storms in Africa, the Celts, the Longship.
I also miss songs that has multi-vocal , Irish music instrument, strange rhythm.

May be Enya has her own reasons.

OK... I should waiting for her new album(a normal album) that not for any special occasion, for next 3 years!!

Knoxy143
Eridanus,

I have to agree, this album is incomparable to Watermark or Shepard Moons.

Landl,

I agree its nice to to have Enya record her own seasonal compositions but to be honest I don't think the trio were feeling inspired enough to fill the album with mostly original compositions this time round. A few tracks like "Stars and Midnight Blue" probably wouldn't have made the cut if this were a standard Enya release.
Violet
I think "Stars and Midnight Blue" is a beautiful song, I like it as I like the album. Talking about Christmas, for sure Enya is the only artist in last ten years who has released something extremely western , she doesn't feel ashamed to show everybody she's a Christian without offending anybody else. I'm not interested in religions, I don't like any religion on this planet but I love to find my western roots in Enya's music smile.gif
LandL
Well, I see a lot of unhappy faces here.. but I wrote my review, through my eyes and feelings. I'm not a music critic, so if I love music, I love, and nothings gonna change it..

And Winter Came… Beautiful gate to the album.. I can feel a winter peace and cold. This is very beautiful Midnight Blue interpretation. And winter came became one of my favourites instrumental songs of Enya. It brings different feelings than others. And there’s few pieces in that song, which fills the heart with something, that I can’t explain... wub.gif

Journey Of The Angels - We all know few more songs about angels Enya sings. Well everything with the music is all right, I like the melody, absolutely like Enya’s voice in it, angel voice.. but lyrics.. It realy could be better. When I read Violet’s post I realized that I’m not the only one who thinks that. “Soft wings so true”.. that’s my favourite in the song from the lyrics. Maybe there’s no need for lyrics in this song at all.. Journey – just melody and Enya’s voice bits.

White Is In The Winter Night - Ho ho ho. When I listen to this song I see streets full with people in a rush getting ready for Christmas. And a lot of snow around. I see children riding on sleighs and a lot of other things. Very cheerful Christmas song. It’s really telling a story, music with lyrics go together very well. Always when I listen to this song my head is never blank, it’s always full with cheerful, funny winter images and it cheers me up happy.gif

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel - This traditional Christmas carol I never listened very much before, but now I can’t stop listening this Enya version. I always knew this song, and I was very curious how Enya will make it. I absolutely love her interpretation. First, only her voice at the beginning, I have a feeling that everything then disappears, and only her voice is around.. After that chorus “OHH” everything’s like coming back, and space fills with soft melody sounds..

Trains And Winter Rains - I have to say this song is becoming one of my favourite tongue.gif First of all I fully love music here. I don’t care if it sounds like pop or not, but it’s Enya, and I take everything she gives. I was thinking very much about the melody here, and I did a conclusion, that melody suits to trains very much. Two weeks ago I went for a long journey with a train to visit my family. And I was listening to this song lot of times and just fell in love with it. I had such a great feelings than never before on the train.. and my mind were just flying together with flying view through the window. Moreover this song sounds very jauntily and that’s great.

Dreams Are More Precious - Ah.. Enya sings about dreams again.. I love it. Beautiful song, gently melody and kindly Enya voice. It is nice to hear when she sings about dreams. I’m a dreamer, I dream day and night, and I definitely agree that Dreams are more precious than gold. And here I want to thank Enya for dreams. She brought really lot of dreams to my life, and there’s nothing more precious.

Last Time By Moonlight - Oh.. this is my favourite in this album. Was very hard to pick between this and My! My! Time Flies! But I picked Last Time By Moonlight.. I never found words to describe how I feel this songs. How many times I had tears in my eyes listening to it.. tears of beauty.. it just touches my heart and soul.. Very deep, and I love lyrics here as well.. Everything’s going well here.. “For no-one knows the way love goes”.. it sounds like a secret.. so sweet and romantic, and her voice, the way she sings.. Omg, I’m just in love with this song !

One Toy Soldier -Beautiful and together bit sad song about a toy soldier. I agree with Violet here. But this song is so sweet as well. Her voice sounds so soft and sometimes I have a feeling like she’s singing for a kid. This song is very close to me, because of my personal reasons, that I won’t explain here.. Beautiful Christmas song, imagining how all night toy soldier worries about his broken drum and here it is, Christmas morning’s miracle and he can play his drum. I just see kids around Christmas tree unwraping their presents and toy soldier on Christmas tree happy playing his drum. Lovely song, lovely Enya wub.gif Happy Christmas!

Stars And Midnight Blue - Beautiful love story.. lovely lyrics as well. For me something’s missing at the beginning of the song. I don’t know what, maybe preface was too short, just few seconds, I don’t know, but the rest song is beautiful.. calm and dreamy.. Only Enya’s music and voice can create this mood. My favourite part is “You have lost yourself in dreaming, I have lost myself in you’.. sigh.. And the bit when she sings “in dreaming” it sound different, I never heard this before in her songs, and here suddenly I have quivers.. innocent.gif

The Spirit Of Christmas Past - One more favorite song.. melody and Enya’s singing is magnificent!!! Lyrics are simple, but somehow, I think, it really suits this way. Maybe because I found it close to my inner life?.. But sometimes I just don’t listen to lyrics, I drown to her voice and music sounds, that’s all I need. And the melody comes always first smile.gif

My! My! Time Flies!- Ah, when the very first time I heard this song, there was nothing on my face but a big smile. It always makes me smile. Why? I don’t know. Because it is something new of Enya, absolutely different, and absolutely wonderful. Experiments never ends and I think this is brilliant song. Trying to imagine how would she stand and move on the stage if she would sing it as performance somewhere? :D Yeah, this song brings me crazy mood, going crazy with Enya, why not?

Oiche Chiuin (Chorale)
flowers.gif flowers.gif flowers.gif

If I talk about lyrics, well, I have to say something as well. First, as Violet said, there is the same words flying through the album. Not only “Undearneath”.. but there’s certain words was too much and hearing nearly in every song all over the album. I know “midnight” is about Christmas and “stars” is about midnight.. but when you hear it in every song in all album these words sound so nice anymore, there comes a feeling you can guess what it will be about.. And about “ringing bells” too :D Lyrics has impact for the songs very much and I hope Roma didn’t loose her particular writers talent to make Enya’s songs exceptional.. That’s another thing why I love My! My! Time Flies! and One Toy Soldier songs because lyrics wasn’t repeating and was different from other songs.

Roma, if you write lyrics, please make it special, different and unique… as you used to do.. closedeyes.gif
And really agree with Violet's words "Roma when you are not inspired you should not wite. Respect Eithne, her talent, her music her genius are worthy of the best of you."

And Winter Came is the album which really made me Enya's fan. Before that I had heard her most popular songs, of course, and I always loved them, but that was it. After buying this album in December, everything changed for me. I was completely stunned by her amazing voice and all those beautiful melodies. I listened this album over and over again all through the Christmas and afterwards too smile.gif My boyfriend was already a little tired of me listening the same album all the time laugh.gif Anyway, this album got me very much interested in Enya and her music. Until then I had only listened to Roxette, but now I wanted to hear everything Enya has done as well. So I did and bought as many albums as I could get and well, I was really amazed how wonderful her music really is!
My special favorite songs from the Christmas album are "White is in the Winter Night" (so simple and yet beautiful!), "The Journey of the Angels" (it is just as if a real angel was singing it!), "A Toy Soldier" (cute lyrics and a nice melody), "A Spirit of Christmas Past" (her voice sounds just so heavenly in this one) and "My! My! Time Flies" (very different from the others, but I think this style fits her very well).
And Oiche Chiuin of course is a beautiful song as well. It was the first time I heard a song in Irish.

Thanks for the discography link! But I think you misunderstood a little what I said about Roxette (perhaps my English is not very good). Roxette is a Swedish band and for years I didn't listen anything exept their music, I was such a huge fan. I still am, but now I have discovered Enya and I definitely became her fan too!

Violet, the day you make a discography, I will wiht great pride visit it whenever.
So far, you only have a lyric center, so I used the Discography on the official site, and that was it.

Gosh, you take things so personally.... Nothing like my other gay friends....

Hi, again, dear Enya`s fans!

I`ve got the new album too. I`ve waited very long for it, because I missed the first batch from the imported disks in Bulgaria around Christmas(and besides there was a very small quantity of them imported here this time). You see, I didn`t write here for a long time and I didn`t know about the album untill several days before New Year, While I heard about the album in one radio show. At first I went looking for it at "Orange", but it wasn`t there, then I went through all the malls, but it wasn`t there either(or they were already selled out through the hollydays)... And then I suddenly found it in a music shop near the opera.

At first I thought that I would be a little disapointed of the new album, but when I turned it on and listened to it after the first two times I found that it`s a very good album. Anyway...

My favourite songs are:

1.Jurney of the angels

2. White is in the winter night(I fell in love with it from the first listening. It`s so sweet! wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

3.O, come, o, come, Emanuel(this is the most mystical song of all and I even compare it to the songs from "The celts", one of my favourite albums

4. Trains and winter rains.(that`s not that briliant, but it`s fresh and I like it)

5. Stars and midnight blue(that`s my favourite of the relaxing songs and somehow it reminds me of some of the good things and people in my live. Thank, you Eithne, another sweet song wub.gif

6. My! My! Time flies!(This is a brilliant song! Not only the music, but the lyrics are brilliant!!! Thank you, Roma! You`re a genious!

As I said, I got the album a little late, but I`m happy to have it and I will be listening to it to the end of the winter(and even after that flowers.gif Thank you Enya, Roma Ryan, Nicky Ryan and all the people, who made this album, this is the best gift for all the Enya fans! sorcerer.gif blush.gif blush.gif sorcerer.gif

Sincerelly yours: Margarita Dyankova

While I do like the new album and it has grown on me, I still think tough Enya is still missing something this time round. Still has grown on me tough......
