Best-selling solo artist Enya to receive honorary doctorate


Best-selling solo artist Enya is to receive an honorary doctorate from NUIG this summer.

Enya, who originally comes from the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair, is a former member of the family group Clannad. She now ranks alongside the most successful female artists in the world.

The four-time Grammy award winner and her production/writing team were nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for their work on The Lord of the Rings. Enya has also won six World Music Awards and the coveted American Golden Plate Award.

Also being honoured is businessman and philanthropist Bill Walsh, a long-time supporter and director of The American Ireland Fund and recipient of its Distinguished Leadership Award in 1997.

International business leader and chair of Reuters, Niall Fitzgerald KBE, will receive an honorary doctorate alongside Chief Justice Pius Langa, the first African Chief Justice of South Africa.

The world of the arts will be represented by honorary graduands Nicholas Carolan, who established the Irish Traditional Music Archive and Dr Jane O Leary, composer, musician, founding member of Aosdána and founder and current chair of Music for Galway.

Commenting on the announcement of this year's graduands, Dr Iognáid O Muircheartaigh, President of NUI, Galway, said, "While this university has had many outstanding honorary graduates in its history, those being honoured this year form a particularly distinguished group. Their contributions in many spheres have been outstanding and NUI, Galway is very pleased to be in a position to recognise these exceptional individuals."

The honorary graduates will be conferred during a special ceremony at the university on Friday 29 June.

RECLUSIVE singer Enya yesterday got the university qualification she always wanted.

The one-time music student-turned international superstar had targeted a music degree at third level and had begun formal tuition while still just Eithne Ni Bhraonain, an unheard-of Donegal schoolgirl. But 70 million album sales, worldwide fame and a string of international accolades later, her academic ambitions had been long forgotten.

Until yesterday, when a delighted Enya was conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Music at NUI Galway.

"I am so thrilled. I feel really excited about this as I had studied music before ever becoming public in the business," she said.

Joining her at the conferring in NUI Galway yesterday were her musical collaborators, Nicky and Roma Ryan.

yes, but I have a strange feeling about all this.. wich I can't describe.
She will never let us to know about something not good in her life I think..we see her mostly surounded with good and beautiful things.. that is how we see her. how she wants to be seen. close to ideally life. but we will never know the deepest things I gues.. it's only a view, wich She gives to all of us..we only see a little. and this "little" is pretty beautiful and we know only about little piece of her life, but sometimes "little" seems so big and endless.. it looks so perfect..
that's way sometimes come minds that She could have everything..


I should'n idealize Her so much as I do now..

Yes.. but just think.. what would be if we knew everything about her life? It wouldn't be so interesting like it is now It's a little sercet.. a little mystery... you know..
She can have everything she wants, she can live everywhere she wants.. But she lives here in her beloved Ireland.. because it is so imoprtant to her.. She has music, she lives really very happy life! Just imagine.. you give all your strenght and time to what you love more of all! This is really meaningful life
